The World Anthropology Day celebration and tributes to deceased anthropologists Prof. Ishad Ali, Prof. M.K. Bashin, Prof. Mannatham Reddi, and Prof. Indira Baruah were followed by discussions on challenges and opportunities facing anthropology in India, including declining student numbers, limited job opportunities, and insufficient funding. Presentations by Banita Behera, Dr. Nibedita Nath, and Prof. Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri highlighted the need for modernization, ethical research practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, and expanding anthropology's influence in policy and public engagement. Next steps include a symposium analyzing anthropology curricula, exploring collaborations to enhance fieldwork opportunities, and developing a plan of action to advance Indian anthropology, potentially involving pressure groups and influencing school curricula.
